October was a bit of a washout as it rained most Sundays, except for Brodgdale’s Apple Festival when the sun actually shone came out to play for a bit. One benefit of all the rain has been an outbreak of mushrooms alongside the tracks especially along around the old Plum and Apple Nursery next to our old Plumleigh Terminus.
The two day Apple Festival went well with a steady stream of passengers during the days, we even had to run 3 trains on occasion throughout the weekend. This saw our Class 31 riding the rails once again after getting a few little modifications in the workshop over the past few months.
As usual, and without going into detail, most of our passengers were local, a few however visiting from Australia, Canada and the Continent. We even had a new volunteer come down to us all the way from the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway in Scotland.
The weather has hampered our P-way efforts, even so, the track expansion joints have now all been greased, the intention now being to switch to the fishplates. We are eying up the planned platform extension which is likely to be done during the post-Christmas break.
Thanks to the efforts of one of our ex-SE Railway staff the electrical signalling system is ready for testing. The system is designed to highlight the current position of our points, so the signalman can quickly see which routes are set, before pulling the signal. The long term plan is for all the signals, points and train location in the Station Section displayed on a board in the Signal box.
Some good news is that Father Christmas has definitely agreed to visit us on the first three Sundays of December. Advance bookings are recommended so that you can skip the queues and guarantee a trip to see Santa. For the first year ever, we are taking bookings for our 2019 FastPass Tickets via our website only, these tickets guarantee your visit to see Santa and allow you to skip the Same Day ticket queues. As always during all Santa Specials we will be selling Same Day tickets, but please be aware their may be long queues for these tickets.
Naturally DIYers, engineers, signalmen, guards/drivers are more than welcome to join our Railway Society. We offer equal opportunities to anyone over 16 and any potential volunteers can contact us via our website to arrange a tour of the railway estate- or just visit on a Sunday (when not raining) and take it from there
