As with June July was again a hot month with passengers and staff overheating and track side grass scorching. Only customers and weeds seem to enjoy themselves especially at Brogdale’s Cherry Festival when we ran trains until the World Cup (and Wimbledon) suddenly reduced demand to almost zero in the afternoon. Our last Sunday was such a washout that the Railway never opened, leaving staff clear to get on with maintenance projects.
Whilst most of our customers at the July Cherry Festival were locals (Ashford, North Kent, Faversham, Thanet, Ashford etc) some came from more faraway places such as Siberia, with tales of the trans-Siberian railway, Tunbridge Wells, Glasgow and Xi’an (China) of the Terracotta Railway fame.
During the month we ran a couple of school trips and two kids’ parties – according to feedback liked by all. Thoughts are now drifting towards our proposed Santa Specials for December but being early days arrangements have yet to be firmed up.
Work has continued on our communications upgrade with talk turning to the provision of miniature track-side telegraph poles to carry various cables and wires.
For those who want something different to mark a special occasion the Railway offers trips for wedding parties as well as offering kids parties on a Sunday and school trips during the week- subject to availability. Details and contacts are on our website.
DIYers, engineers, signalmen, guards/drivers are more than welcome to join our Railway Society. We happily rely equal opportunities so if anyone would like to see what we can offer then contact us via our website to arrange a tour of the railway estate- or just visit on a Sunday and take it from there.
